Simon’s joking attitude about an event that greatly disturbed Stephen is another example of how Joyce uses father-son relationships to show his problems with Ireland. Father-son relationships contribute a great deal to the meaning of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man as a whole. As the book progresses, Stephen’s relationship with his father becomes strained, especially as his father’s financial failures cause his family to fall into poverty. Also, Simon’s drinking habits and tendency to dwell in the past causes trouble in his relationship with Stephen. Lastly, the harsh actions by Father Dolan is another example of a troublesome father-son relationship in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Shifting mindsets A recap of TEDxHultLondon 2018

This year, we had the privilege of organizing our very own TEDx for Hult in London. On April 28th, at the very tip top of the London skyscraper known as The Cheesegrater, TEDxHultLondon unfolded with eleven inspiring and thought-provoking speakers and a musical performance. The event was  hosted by Hults very own Marketing Professor,  David James. The theme of our event: A  Shift in Mindset. The mindset that we have at any given moment influences how we act, react, and make decisions. Yet, with a slight change in mindset, our perspectives and outlook on an issue can completely change. This is the theme we wanted to explore—how a small shift can have a big impact. This theme was broad enough to cover a diverse range of topics and ideas for the talks. It was also highly relevant and relatable for our audience. Our main goal was for our speakers to present concise, practical, and actionable takeaways that the audience can implement in their lives to make a change—no matter how big or small—today. This theme also fits perfectly with Hult International Business Schools theme for 2018: A Year of Positive Impact. Fostering a growth mindset is the basis of everything that we do at Hult. The mindset that we have at any given moment influences how we act, react, and make decisions. The team behind TEDxHultLondon The TEDxHultLondon organizing team was made up of 10 ambitious members from Hult’s postgraduate campus, with roles from Speaker Curation and Marketing, to Audience Coordination and Videography. Once we set the theme of our event and received our TEDx license, our next big challenges were to curate our line-up of speakers, find a venue, seek sponsorship, and advertise the event. Our final speakers and their ideas covered a wide spectrum of topics, including biohacking, contemporary art, Blockchain, and transformational HR, to name just a few. With the generous help of our key external sponsors, MS Amlin and Aon, we were able to secure the 45th floor of The Leadenhall Building (also known in London’s skyline as â€Å"The Cheesegrater†). This incredible venue provided our event with a 360-degree view of London, nearly 225 meters above the ground. As a student-run, not-for-profit event, every effort from every team member, regardless of their role, was put into finding support within our community for every aspect of our event. As with many not-for-profit events and organizations, this definitely proved to be our biggest challenge. We were dreaming big and strived to host the best TEDx event in London for our school. Kicking off the day The day started at 12:30 pm for our attendees, where they checked in at reception and were brought up to the top floor of The Cheesegrater to collect their name tags and swag bags. (Fun fact:  Pokemon was being filmed on site that day, so our guests walked through a movie set and into an office named â€Å"CNM† instead of MS Amlin!) All name tags included three unique topics each attendee listed as â€Å"what to talk to me about.† This aimed to inspire conversations and networking throughout the day. Margareta James, Director of the Harley Street Wellbeing Clinic,  helped us kick-off with a talk on â€Å"The Idea of You: Shape Your Own Reality.† This was followed by Mariana Bontempo, an experienced project manager  from Applied Blockchain, explaining the paradigm shift from a centralized to a decentralized system. Next, Mark Godfrey, Senior Curator at the Tate Modern, shared his latest exhibition, â€Å"Soul of a Nation,† describing how it shifted the mindset of not only its viewers but also the Tate Modern as an institution. Finally, Praveetha Patalay, Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, closed the first period with a talk on â€Å"Rethinking Mental Illness. Swag bags set up and ready for guests to arrive. The venue provided incredible views of the London skyline, including the Shard. Curator Mark Godfrey discusses the impact of the recent Tate exhibit, Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power. An inspirational afternoon After a short break, Hult London’s very own Samineh Shaheem (aka Dean Sam) shared an inspiring talk about limiting beliefs, titled This Talk Will Change Your Life! Her talk was followed by Viktor Johannes Matre from Amnesty International Norway on â€Å"Using Our Freedom of Expression for Those Who Can’t.† Next up was technology entrepreneur  Teemu Arina with a  thought-provoking talk on biohacking, titled â€Å"Unleash Your Inner Potential.† Finally, to close the second round of talks, Kydd Boyle of social enterprise Horizons Next Gen  shared an intriguing and unexpected personal story, illustrating how communities can shape behavioral patterns. Dean Sam’s intriguing talk grabbed the audience’s attention with This Talk Will Change Your Life! †¦except, it won’t.† Energy levels were at an all-time high for our final three captivating speakers. Perry Timms, Founder of  People Transformational HR, began with a talk on â€Å"People-powered Design,† followed by solo trans-Atlantic rower, Stephen Shanly, who shared the story of his journey. Our events final talk was delivered by Ashridge Executive Educations Trudi West, who led a discussion on  Ã¢â‚¬Å"The Darkside of Integrity.† As you can see, within the theme of a shift in mindset, our line-up of speakers brought eleven very unique and new ideas to the stage. We must also give recognition to our speaker coaches Dr. David James and our very own Hult MBA alumna, Edita Kaminskaite, who worked tirelessly to practice and train with our speakers. Our fantastic audience members included Hult undergraduate and postgraduate students, alumni, faculty, and staff, as well as business professionals from our extended network. An evening of networking After the final speaker, the event continued with an evening of networking. Audience members and speakers were able to share a glass of wine and nibbles and discuss the ideas that were gleaned from the day. For the TEDxHultLondon Organizing Team, it was an absolute honor and dream come true to be able to host such an event for our school. We have become our own little TEDx family and will be forever grateful to Hult for bringing us together, supporting us in every way possible, and giving us this opportunity to put on our dream event. A day of inspiring speakers prompted lively discussion. For anyone out there who loves TED talks and has ever considered organizing their own local TEDx event, it is something that I strongly recommend pursuing. On the other hand, acquisition is basically when a bigger company takes over or buys out a smaller company. In that case, the acquired company has little but no choice to be sold out. The main reasons behind mergers and acquisitions are of survival, entering new markets, efficiency or even expanding as a global firm. Survival is considered as a reason for most of the companies which lack stability and are unable to deal with competitive forces. Thus, in this way, private or small companies can be aided financially and be assisted upon for growing into a business entity. Many companies acquire or merge to use it as a gateway to enter new or foreign markets. In such cases, acquiring or merging with a well settled firm in that current market would prove to be highly informative and helpful. Moreover, the company can merge or acquire in order to become more efficient in production and also get involv ed in a wide range of variety of products. Also, through merger and acquisition, a firm gets a chance to expand its existing operations and come into the spotlight of international market for the risk of higher revenues. (Harrera, 1996) Facts and Figures Mergers and acquisitions are quite common in the current market scenario, but the fact that how many mergers and acquisitions prove to be successful and how many end up in failure, is the true factor to be considered. Examples of mergers and acquisition are AOL Time Warner, GlaxoSmithKline, Hero Honda as well as Sony Ericsson, News Corp acquiring My Space, Vodafone Group plc acquiring a share in Essar Hutchison etc. This does prove that nowadays mergers and acquisitions are a popular strategy, easily figured out by so many companies in the market. Companies tend to combine in order to bring together their useful resources and get a bigger market share. For instance, the mobile telecommunications market is a tough and constantly changing market driven by close competition. The merger of Sony Ericsson was an effort to bring up the pool of reso urces and strengthen in front of major competitors of Nokia and Motorola. The merger has helped the company to portray a better performance in the global market performing at a comparable level with its competitors. Secondly, the company would try getting a better name in the international market, like in the case of Vodafone which acquired a share in Hutchison making India Vodafones second largest mobile market right after United States of America. (Roll, 2005) Furthermore, there are many more reasons including higher revenue and a more efficient usage of resources. Also, in the time of recession mergers and acquisitions are way more successful because many companies do not survive the credit crunch and prefer merging or being acquired instead of closing down. Therefore, many small companies are listing themselves down for this. The good news is that large corporations may actually start looking for deals again. The bad news is that the buying spree will be motivated by massive valuation decreases. While big tech companies may try to buy established companies with revenues, Mc Aleer also believes that smaller, tech-focused companies will attract suitors. They monitor different types and sizes of companies and study their developments in the business world constantly. Thus by merging or acquiring any company following a different organizational culture would be a light of opportunity. Even though some renowned companies have been highly successful with their merging or acquiring decisions, but the fact cannot be ignored that many companies have failed miserably in their strategies. For example, the Daimler and Chrysler partnership resulted in both the firms loosing around 60 billion dollars of market value, whereas AOL Time Warner realized the decrease in the companys worth of 54 billion dollars ever since the merger took place. Furthermore, a collaborative effort was launched between Coca Cola and Procter and Gamble of worth 4 billion dollars, which would bring all the brands together and the company staff working under one. This decision was soon found to be a mistake all in five months time, as the stock of Coca Cola drastically went down while Procter and Gambles prices rose. It resulted in the collaboration being called off. (Roll et al. 2009) It is important to know what exact reasons led to the failure of these efforts. Firstly, many of the companies jumped to collaborative efforts without carefully deducing the amount of risk and the great monetary loss in it. It is difficult to analyze how two different companies would work with different set of resources and how well the company would do under such circumstances. Secondly, many companies have failed with their efforts because of the difference in both the companys organizational cultures. Sometimes one management is not happy working under the other or shareholders are not satisfied with it. Thirdly, there is a likely possibility that a newly merged company does not survive due to the intense amount of competition present. This can be mainly concerned with the global market. Moreover, at times the market itself is reluctant in accepting the new company due to many obvious reasons like cultural reasons, geographical reasons, social reasons etc. Under the current global financial crisis, mergers and acquisitions are pretty much successful if carefully planned along with suitable market conditions. In this time of credit crunch, companies are coming up with cost saving or cost effective strategies and thus are flexible to small mergers and acquisitions which increase revenue and production. More flexible strategies should be used by companies to ensure the merger or acquisition runs successfully. These strategies include keeping both the company staff satisfied and aware. Nowadays, the companys employees and shareholders are not told regarding major decisions like mergers or acquisitions. This is considered unethical as employees and shareholders do hold a very vital position in the company and because of such mergers a lot of jobs are changed or eliminated. An ideal example is that of Lenovo and IBM, after the acquisition Lenovo put IBMs executives in charge as the Chief Executive Officer of the company. Furthermore, it helped change the image of both the companies and it helped regain customer trust by launching the new product of the ThinkPad X41 Tablet. Conclusion In summation, mergers and acquisitions are surely affected by the financial crisis, but companies are still considering these options because they provide a promising good start if planned accordingly as well as a significant growth in market share. Moreover, it provides a good way to battle the credit crunch by pulling together two or more companies resources together. It is evident that not many major mergers or acquisitions will be seen but such activity at a smaller level is always functioning, even at a time of financial crisis. Even though it is proven that not all mergers and acquisitions are a success and a lot of them fail to serve their purpose, mergers and acquisitions are a good way to increase profitability and market share.
