The Failures of Fatherhood Simon Daedalus and Joyces Ireland - Literature Essay Samples
Father-son relationships are a part of the fabric of everyday life, and because of this, father-son relationships are a recurring theme of great literature. While a father can certainly be a role model and source of strength for a son, a father who fails in his role can create a very negative relationship. In The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Stephen Dedalus has a troublesome relationship with his father, Simon Dedalus. Stephen also has problematic relationships with other fathers: Catholic priests. Joyce uses the shortcomings of these fathers to symbolize the problems facing Ireland and show Joyces complex relationship with his homeland. One major way in which Simon Dedalus symbolizes the problems facing Ireland is through Simons fall into poverty. In Chapter 2, Simon faces increasing financial hardship, and Stephen notices his fathers failures. Despite still being quite young, Stephen understands that his father was in trouble financially (67). Forced to move to a cheerless house in Dublin, Stephen begins to resent his father (68). Stephens resentment of his fathers poverty shows how Joyce resents the poverty of Ireland. Subject to harsh British rule, Ireland was one of the poorer countries in Europe during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Dilapidated urban areas, such as those described in the novel, covered most of Dublin during this time period (ââ¬Å"Poverty and Healthâ⬠). Therefore, the move to Dublin is especially significant because Dublin is poorer than some of the areas around it, just as Ireland is poorer than the Western European countries near it (Britain, France, etc.). Just as the poverty of his f ather deprives Stephen of ââ¬Å"comfort and revery of Blackrock, the poverty of Ireland deprives Joyce of the luxuries that he could have in wealthier countries. The financial decline of Simon continues to get worse throughout the novel. As Stephen ages, he continues to notice the disorder, the misrule and confusion of his fathers house(176). Stephen refers to the house as his fathers house, showing how Stephen blames his father for his familys financial situation. Joyce uses Stephens resentment of his fathers poverty to display his displeasure with the poverty of Ireland. Another instance in Chapter 2 where the shortcomings of Dedalus symbolizes problems facing Ireland is Stephens trip with his father to Cork. Stephen has to accompany his father to his own dispossession as he has to sell off his estate (92). Stephens unhappiness on this trip is another example of how Joyce despises the poverty of Ireland. Also, from the onset of the trip Stephen is aware of his fathers draughts from his pocket flask(92). As the trip continues, Simon drinks as he journeys from bar to bar around the city (99). His drinking becomes so disruptive that Stephen finds that he must cover that shameful sign of his fathers drinking bout(99). Simons drinking is another problem of Ireland that Joyce seeks to criticize. Ireland is known for being a heavy drinking country, and the stereotype of the drunk Irish is common (ââ¬Å"Alcoholâ⬠¦Irelandâ⬠). Joyce uses the drinking habits of Simon Dedalus to criticize the heavy drinking of Ireland. The effect Simons drinking has on Stephen reveals this criticism. Stephen considers his fathers drunkenness shameful, and he is disappointed that his fathers drinking allows him to be duped by the servile manners of the porter(99,94). Stephen is wearied and dejected by his fathers drinking, showing how Joyce uses Stephens relationship with his father to criticize obstacles facing Ireland. Another shortcoming of Simon Dedalus that Joyce highlights in his Chapter 2 visit to Cork is his tendency to dwell on the past. During the trip, Stephen [listens] to stories he had heard beforeâ⬠¦ of his fathers youth, and has to accompany his father as he drank to the memory of [his] past(96,101). Faced with a daunting financial future and a return to his hometown of Cork, Simon Dedalus dwells on past memories. The reminiscing of his father has a negative effect on Stephen: as he [listens] without sympathy, he begins to feel a faint sicknessâ⬠¦ in his heart(92,96). Just as Stephen disapproves of his father being stuck in the past, Joyce despises the ways in which Irish culture and society is stuck in the past. One example of this can be seen in the Christmas dinner discussion about Parnell. Parnell spearheads an Irish independence movement, but the Catholic public moralityâ⬠of Ireland [hounds Parnell] into the grave after his affair (30,33). As he grows up, Stephen rea lizes that Ireland is the old sow that eats her farrow, destroying a great political figure because of its old-fashioned moral system (220). This connection is another example of how Joyce uses Stephen and Simons relationships to show problems he has with Ireland. While Stephen has a troublesome relationship with his biological father, he also has a strained relationship with Catholic priests that are fathers in name, such a Father Dolan. At Clongowes College, Father Dolan pandies Stephen for not doing his work, when in fact Stephen had broken his glasses. Stephen finds this punishment ââ¬Å"cruel and unfairâ⬠as he is left ââ¬Å"tremblingâ⬠and ââ¬Å"quiveringâ⬠(54,51,52). The strict actions of Father Dolan greatly disturb Stephen, and Joyce uses this strained relationship to symbolize his dislike of the austerity of Irish morality and religion. The sermons given by Father Arnall on the Belvedere retreat that Stephen attends showcases the strict philosophy that Joyce symbolizes in Stephenââ¬â¢s relationship with Father Dolan. The scorching speech is the philosophical equivalent of hitting a child with a pandybat, and the anguish that the punishment causes Stephen shows how Joyce disapproves of the strict moral philosophy practiced in Ireland. Furthermore, Simon Dedalus later hears about Father Dolanââ¬â¢s punishment of Stephen, having a ââ¬Å"great laugh over itâ⬠and calling Stephen ââ¬Å"impudentâ⬠(76,75). Simonââ¬â¢s joking attitude about an event that greatly disturbed Stephen is another example of how Joyce uses father-son relationships to show his problems with Ireland. Father-son relationships contribute a great deal to the meaning of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man as a whole. As the book progresses, Stephenââ¬â¢s relationship with his father becomes strained, especially as his fatherââ¬â¢s financial failures cause his family to fall into poverty. Also, Simonââ¬â¢s drinking habits and tendency to dwell in the past causes trouble in his relationship with Stephen. Lastly, the harsh actions by Father Dolan is another example of a troublesome father-son relationship in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Joyce uses these problems to symbolize problems in his own relationship with Ireland: his displeasure with the poverty, drinking, and the outdated and strict morals of his home country.

Shifting mindsets A recap of TEDxHultLondon 2018
This year, we had the privilege of organizing our very own TEDx for Hult in London. On April 28th, at the very tip top of the London skyscraper known as The Cheesegrater, TEDxHultLondon unfolded with eleven inspiring and thought-provoking speakers and a musical performance. The event wasà hosted by Hults very own Marketing Professor,à David James. The theme of our event: Aà Shift in Mindset. The mindset that we have at any given moment influences how we act, react, and make decisions. Yet, with a slight change in mindset, our perspectives and outlook on an issue can completely change. This is the theme we wanted to exploreââ¬âhow a small shift can have a big impact. This theme was broad enough to cover a diverse range of topics and ideas for the talks. It was also highly relevant and relatable for our audience. Our main goal was for our speakers to present concise, practical, and actionable takeaways that the audience can implement in their lives to make a changeââ¬âno matter how big or smallââ¬âtoday. This theme also fits perfectly with Hult International Business Schools theme for 2018: A Year of Positive Impact. Fostering a growth mindset is the basis of everything that we do at Hult. The mindset that we have at any given moment influences how we act, react, and make decisions. The team behind TEDxHultLondon The TEDxHultLondon organizing team was made up of 10 ambitious members from Hultââ¬â¢s postgraduate campus, with roles from Speaker Curation and Marketing, to Audience Coordination and Videography. Once we set the theme of our event and received our TEDx license, our next big challenges were to curate our line-up of speakers, find a venue, seek sponsorship, and advertise the event. Our final speakers and their ideas covered a wide spectrum of topics, including biohacking, contemporary art, Blockchain, and transformational HR, to name just a few. With the generous help of our key external sponsors, MS Amlin and Aon, we were able to secure the 45th floor of The Leadenhall Building (also known in Londonââ¬â¢s skyline as ââ¬Å"The Cheesegraterâ⬠). This incredible venue provided our event with a 360-degree view of London, nearly 225 meters above the ground. As a student-run, not-for-profit event, every effort from every team member, regardless of their role, was put into finding support within our community for every aspect of our event. As with many not-for-profit events and organizations, this definitely proved to be our biggest challenge. We were dreaming big and strived to host the best TEDx event in London for our school. As a student-run event, we were dreaming big and strived to host the best TEDx event in London for our school. Kicking off the day The day started at 12:30 pm for our attendees, where they checked in at reception and were brought up to the top floor of The Cheesegrater to collect their name tags and swag bags. (Fun fact:à Pokemon was being filmed on site that day, so our guests walked through a movie set and into an office named ââ¬Å"CNMâ⬠instead of MS Amlin!) All name tags included three unique topics each attendee listed as ââ¬Å"what to talk to me about.â⬠This aimed to inspire conversations and networking throughout the day. Margareta James, Director of the Harley Street Wellbeing Clinic,à helped us kick-off with a talk on ââ¬Å"The Idea of You: Shape Your Own Reality.â⬠This was followed by Mariana Bontempo, an experienced project managerà from Applied Blockchain, explaining the paradigm shift from a centralized to a decentralized system. Next, Mark Godfrey, Senior Curator at the Tate Modern, shared his latest exhibition, ââ¬Å"Soul of a Nation,â⬠describing how it shifted the mindset of not only its viewers but also the Tate Modern as an institution. Finally, Praveetha Patalay, Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, closed the first period with a talk on ââ¬Å"Rethinking Mental Illness. Swag bags set up and ready for guests to arrive. The venue provided incredible views of the London skyline, including the Shard. Curator Mark Godfrey discusses the impact of the recent Tate exhibit, Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power. An inspirational afternoon After a short break, Hult Londonââ¬â¢s very own Samineh Shaheem (aka Dean Sam) shared an inspiring talk about limiting beliefs, titled This Talk Will Change Your Life! Her talk was followed by Viktor Johannes Matre from Amnesty International Norway on ââ¬Å"Using Our Freedom of Expression for Those Who Canââ¬â¢t.â⬠Next up was technology entrepreneurà Teemu Arina with aà thought-provoking talk on biohacking, titled ââ¬Å"Unleash Your Inner Potential.â⬠Finally, to close the second round of talks, Kydd Boyle of social enterprise Horizons Next Genà shared an intriguing and unexpected personal story, illustrating how communities can shape behavioral patterns. Dean Samââ¬â¢s intriguing talk grabbed the audienceââ¬â¢s attention with This Talk Will Change Your Life! â⬠¦except, it wonââ¬â¢t.â⬠Energy levels were at an all-time high for our final three captivating speakers. Perry Timms, Founder ofà People Transformational HR, began with a talk on ââ¬Å"People-powered Design,â⬠followed by solo trans-Atlantic rower, Stephen Shanly, who shared the story of his journey. Our events final talk was delivered by Ashridge Executive Educations Trudi West, who led a discussion onà ââ¬Å"The Darkside of Integrity.â⬠As you can see, within the theme of a shift in mindset, our line-up of speakers brought eleven very unique and new ideas to the stage. We must also give recognition to our speaker coaches Dr. David James and our very own Hult MBA alumna, Edita Kaminskaite, who worked tirelessly to practice and train with our speakers. Our fantastic audience members included Hult undergraduate and postgraduate students, alumni, faculty, and staff, as well as business professionals from our extended network. An evening of networking After the final speaker, the event continued with an evening of networking. Audience members and speakers were able to share a glass of wine and nibbles and discuss the ideas that were gleaned from the day. For the TEDxHultLondon Organizing Team, it was an absolute honor and dream come true to be able to host such an event for our school. We have become our own little TEDx family and will be forever grateful to Hult for bringing us together, supporting us in every way possible, and giving us this opportunity to put on our dream event. A day of inspiring speakers prompted lively discussion. For anyone out there who loves TED talks and has ever considered organizing their own local TEDx event, it is something that I strongly recommend pursuing. The journey and destination were more than anything that I could have ever imagined. Its an adventure you get to share with your team members, which will be remembered forever. Of course, it is not an easy undertaking and will require your dedication, hard work, passion, and energy (lots of it!) but donââ¬â¢t all things that are worth doing? And I promise, it is worth it! Thank you so much for reading and please stay tuned for our TEDx speaker videos, which are coming soon!
